Depending upon environmental conditions, wiper blades can have dramatic differences in their lifespan and operation. The following tips may help you to maximise wiper performance and to avoid damage to the blades and avoid untimely replacements.
Hours of heat, summer weather, ozone effects, UV light and dust contamination lead to impaired vision. Tough insect remains dry up and cause tears in the wiper blade rubber. This causes smudging. Regularly clean the windshield and the wiper blade of insects, tree sap and pollen by using a special sponge before every drive.
Strong winds and heavy rainfall. Fine tears in the wiper blade rubber from falling leaves & twigs lead to smudging that can affect vision in unfavorable light conditions in addition to leading to high risk of glare from oncoming vehicles. Remove leaves from under the wiper blades, so that no tears can be caused in the wiper blade rubber. Add windscreen cleaner to the windscreen reservoir to combat dust & dirt.
Bitter cold temperatures which may go down to -30°C, salt and mud splashes, ice formation and snow on the windshield and wiper blades can impair vision. Lift up the wiper blades at night and place a plastic between wiper blades and windshield. Never try to clear an icy windshield using the wipers!
Fine early morning mist, water splashes, heavy rainfall and then a dry windshield again: Rapidly changing tropical weather conditions can impair vision. It is important to change wiper blades once a year at the very least. Replenish the washer fluid reservoir with water and a glass of cleaning solution. Observe the mixing instructions. Avoid using the wiper blades on dry glass as the co-efficient of friction is about 10 times more than wet condition.
